Individuals Discontinuing Anti-Obesity Jabs Regain Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Weight management often requires ongoing approaches.

New research indicates that individuals who come off popular slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt conventional diet and exercise programs.

Findings released in a prominent health publication shows that while obese people often shed substantial amounts of their body weight while on the medication, the weight comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"People using these treatments need to be aware of the danger of fast rebound weight gain when the therapy ends," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain implies a reversion to original weight within about a year and a half.

Comparing Treatments

The study, which examined 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the results of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.

Researchers point out that people who lose weight through diet and exercise generally see a slower weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

Explaining the Fast Regain

Doctors believe the way of the jabs explains the accelerated weight return.

The injections mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate hunger.

"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations far above than the body's typical production could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and could reduce sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Withdrawal of this medication results in appetite is unsuppressed, making overeating far more likely."

A Lifelong Disease?

Health authorities advise the injections for individuals with obesity-related health risks, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals argue that, considering the likelihood of relapse, the therapy should be considered long-term.

This perspective is supported by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "highlight the persistent nature of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like diabetes.

User Accounts

Users who have come off the jabs report a intense resurgence of hunger.

"It felt as if a switch flipping and I was suddenly ravenous," said an individual.

This challenge is worsened if patients have not established sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.

Widespread Adoption

Recent estimates suggest that millions of people in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with demand remaining high.

  • Use is more common among women than men.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest usage rates.
  • A large proportion access the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.

In conclusion, researchers emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are effective agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone cure and long-term success hinges on ongoing lifestyle support.
