A fatal train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the speed and handling of the country's key public works projects.
The crash happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a line developed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving economic development in the area.
“We will thoroughly investigate the cause of this accident,” stated the head of state.
The leader reported that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The leader added plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those involved.
Key Undertaking of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a signature development scheme of the former leader, whose presidency concluded the previous year. This rail line was intimately linked to his leadership's developmental goals for the southern region.
Another massive railway undertaking from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economic fortunes of a comparatively less developed part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Worries
The development of both railway systems was managed by the army, marking a notable growth of its role in civilian infrastructure. They were completed at an fast-tracked pace, surpassing predictions to be partially launched before the end of that presidency.
However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously sparked ongoing concerns over operational security.
- Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This includes an earlier collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-lethal derailments.
Appeals for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the head of a key rival party demanded an urgent halt in the building and running of all such projects.
This pause was requested while awaiting a full independent investigation. The party stated that the loss of life "demands swift accountability."
In reaction, the president maintained that the train had been operating in total compliance with all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the construction and operation of these national initiatives.
